NFALA Philippines Symposium

In February, I had the incredible honor of joining NFALA’s inaugural Philippines Symposium, a weeklong journey that brought together an inspiring group of
Fil-Ams (Filipino Americans) and legal professionals. From paying respects at the Manila American Cemetery to meeting ten Justices of the Philippine Supreme Court, exploring Palawan’s Underground River, and island-hopping around El Nido, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that reconnected me to my heritage in the most meaningful way.

I came home jet-lagged, sun-soaked, and so profoundly grateful. Here’s a look at our itinerary:

Day 1: Visited the Manila American Cemetery to honor those who fought against fascism 80 years ago, followed by a family dinner at The Peninsula Manila.

Day 2: Toured the Philippine Supreme Court, where we were honored to meet ten of the fifteen Justices, followed by CLE sessions at SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan, one of the country’s leading law firms.

Day 3: Traveled to and toured Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Day 4: Took a guided tour of the Underground River, then made the ~5-hour drive to El Nido.

Day 5: Enjoyed a full day of island hopping around El Nido and a bit of local shopping.

Day 6: Flew back to Manila with time for more local shopping and a much-needed massage at the spa.

Day 7: Home to Indianapolis, filled with gratitude and a new perspective.

This trip was more than a professional exchange; it was a homecoming. It deepened my appreciation for where my family came from and the global connections we continue to build through law, service, and community.
